Welcome to Janus Quirinus!
Janus Quirinus, which our ancestors ordered to be closed whenever there was peace, secured by victory, throughout the whole domain of the Roman people on land and sea, and which, before my birth is recorded to have been closed but twice in all since the foundation of the city, the senate ordered to be closed thrice while I was princeps.
Augustus Res Gestae 13
The main theme of this site is Roman history, although I may include other areas of Classics too. This is a site in the process of being put together. The only complete section is “Essays”. Hey, Rome was not built in a day. If it was, I would have asked the designer(s) for help.
These essays are my college papers, some of my articles I wrote for Suite 101.com, some of my forum posts, and my friends’ articles.
A section on his achievements, his Rome, his portraiture, his humour, his sayings and what people over ages say about him. Eventually, this section will also include books out of copyright.
The links are present, just very haphazard. I still need to weed out the links.
Who said what in which context according to whom?
For instance, most people know that Julius Caesar said “I came, I saw, I conquered.” But who reported it? If you do a search on the web, the name that pops up the most is Shakespeare! Yes, Shakespeare uses it Love's Labours Lost IV.1.67-8*, but he plagiarises it from Suetonius (Divine Julius 37), and without reference to Caesar.
Then there are the quotes you know exist, but you cannot find a source or the speaker or the context. My goal is on put up my database on this site. It includes ancient and modern quotes on matters about the Classical world.
I am putting in links to biographies and discussions of people who made a difference. When my quote database is on-line, I will also put in quotable quotes from these people.
My collection of photos.
Coming soon… (I hope)
